History

A little history, A few years back C.A.P.C.S. managed to get some zoning bylaws in place. Basically anything to do with the Sex trade has been zoned out to the industrial areas. So no strip bars or sexy undies in the City. Continue Reading »

CAPCS website is no more. The Taliban may  have gone Provincial. This Human rights bill is earily simular to what hapened in Medicine Hat just a few years ago. I think it is the same group of people. probly using the same type of tactics on our mla’s.  Whats next? banning teeny mags at schools becouse some one will complain about them. banning kids from the school library becouse they are reading up on Evolution or human biology, therefore upsetting the upcomming fanatic sitting near by.

Dr. Rossler has barred Medicine Hats very own Taliban  from skulking around the halls of our schools. After reviewing the program  materials, Dr Rossler in a Med Hat news article explained her position. “They are a religious organization, if we let one group in, we have to let them all in”

There are still some unanswered questions on this issue. Top of the list, why is this group being so secretive about their programs? Second on the list.  How did they get into the schools to present these secret programs and materials, without the knowlege, or permission from the Superintendent in the first place?

Here is a bit of news that will be hitting the news soon about a group (religious oriented) entering several school (and looking to expand into more) teaching their own brand of “sex education” to our students. When questioned about it back in around summer time the group was evasive and reluctant to give details because it was not to start until this March (ish). Yet this group is now teaching its principals to the students as I speak. When pressed with details on the topics and criterion the/a representative of this group became belligerent and threatening. The group is a prolife group and the jest of the classes to be taught to students is about family planning/anti abortion and NOT similar to the classes already being taught by public health employees in schools now. Faking It

C.A.P.C.S is very good at finding case studies, then publishing bits of them out of context. The following is an example. Underneath the C.A.P.C.S version is the original in full. As you can see, some important bits of the original did not make it out of the C.A.P.C.S chop shop. I highlighted one of the important bits. You may also notice that the original study advises the parents to supervise and teach their kids. No mention of swarming City Hall to bully Council Members into passing silly By-Laws, or slandering honest store owners Continue Reading »

A Letter from Jim Ogston

It is always interesting how the other side (CAPCS and city hall) always make ludicrous comments how we (their opposition and the general public) are responsible for the misinformation and confusion when you only have to read their replies, double talk and yes “studies” to realize that the source of all this malarkey is from them themselves. For a body of people that claim to hold law degrees, teacher degrees and masters in ??? I am amazed the amount of BS they disseminate to the public. They use these same credentials and claims that they are well read to give their cause the foul aroma of legitimacy. They prey on the ignorance of the public and this is in my mind insidious and far beneath any claim to be “Positive Community Standards”. Taking reports, studies from other credible (or not so credible), or making their own juvenile study as the justification of their puritan utopia and then project this to the unknowledgeable masses is not only deplorable but repugnant.
As a researcher I am fully aware that studies can be altered to match the theorem of the researcher but to read this CAPCS study that would warrant an “F” at any academic level including Kindergarten/preschool and then use this study to ensnare a group of civic lawmakers is criminal. Rather than distance themselves from the CAPCS study four council members have chosen to ignore the municipal government act regarding proper representation of its electorate. Five council members have realized they have been duped and have opted for good governance but the fab four continue to misrepresent Medicine Hat citizens by promoting false information to its masses and in Dumanowski’s words offend the decency of same citizens. All citizens should voice a demand for a public apology from this ignorant politician and the mayor if he had any decency and a smidgen of leadership would admonish the offending councilor publicly as well. His failure to do so last council meeting is complacency in how CAPCS and his other 3 council members have failed to dutifully represent Medicine Hat in accordance with the Municipal Government Act. If Smith demands that council remember their obligations to the Municipal Government Act then she/they must follow suit. If not then my past statements that Council are the lapdogs of CAPCS rings true and the public should view any fairness of representation as a fallacy and demand an inquiry from the Minister of Municipal Affairs in Edmonton. Council members swear an oath to god when they take office, so if they are willing to use the church as their support then perhaps we as citizens of Medicine Hat should hold them accountable to that oath particularly if they refuse to separate church from state

Update: The Proposed Bylaw was defeated at first reading: That by the way is rare in its self, it has only hapened two or three times before. Continue Reading »

The proposed Bylaw will go before Council on Monday the 19 of March 2007. C.A.P.C.S of course is busy spreading propaganda. After failing on a Petition to have Adult entertainment/materials Bylaws passed in 2001. C.A.P.C.S has been on a campaign to rid Medicine Hat of anything they deem Adult Entertainment/Materials. {In order to protect the Children} On a personal note. I think the Children need protection from right wing crusading Nutters.  Continue Reading »

Dear Operator:

At the March 17, 2003 meeting of City Council, a motion was passed requiring that a letter be sent to vendors or providers of adult magazines seeking their cooperation in restricting the display and sale of such magazines. Council’s objective in pursuing this initiative is to protect children from magazines which are unsuitable for their age.

Censorship

Minutes of the Monday, August 20, 2001, regular Medicine Hat City Council Meeting the minutes were adopted as presented

Delegation

Mrs. Stigter, re: Petition against Pornography

Mrs. Joyce Stigter representing the Citizens of Alberta for Positive Community Standards (C.A.P.C.S.), concurred that the petition presented did not have enough signatures to meet the requirements for a plebiscite or bylaw, but asked the Council Members consider proceeding with one at the upcoming election. After providing statistics from other urban centers, Mrs.Stigter expressed the concern that restrictions must be put in place to remove or eliminate sexually oriented businesses from Medicine Hat as it will continue to have a negative effect on the community.

Alt. Kelly seconded my Ald. Friesen, moved:

That council members allow a Plebiscite in the upcoming civic election asking for bylaws that would prohibit future proposed adult video stores, adult book stores. Adult bottle clubs, adult juice bars. Adult mini-theaters. Adult peep shows, adult massage parlors, dial a porn numbers, escort services, strip clubs, lingerie bars, sexual aids stores, and other businesses that would promote explicate or dominantly sexual activity.

Council members requested that a committee be formed to research and discuss the concerns of the residents and possibly bring forward a bylaw, and referred the matter to the public services Committee

Communication

L. Godin, re: Letters from Electors re: Display of Adult Materials and Business Licensing Fees.

Mr., Godin provided an update that additional letters had been received, increasing the number of submissions to 729.

Ald. Mandeville, seconded by Ald Craven, moved:

“That the Letters be referred to the Public Services Committee and other Committees as appropriate, for discussion and review.”
